What is the weather like during Inca Jungle trek?

January corresponds to the rainy season in the Cusco region, resulting in high levels of rainfall due to increased humidity. We highly recommend bringing appropriate attire and equipment to accommodate the rain, such as waterproof jackets and shoes.

It is important to note that temperatures during the day typically range between 20 °C (68 °F) and 25 °C (68 °F), although it is worth considering that temperatures may be lower in areas of higher altitude.

Advantages: This time of year offers a remarkable display of nature, as the rainy season sustains the forests and the Amazon rainforest, resulting in vibrant greenery. Furthermore, this is the ideal period to capture stunning photographs. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to witness waterfalls and rivers at their peak splendor. An added benefit is the reduced number of tourists, allowing for a more serene ambiance and an authentic experience. There are no valid reasons to abstain from embarking on this journey!

Disadvantages: In January, the days are shorter, and the wet weather may make certain trails within the Inca Jungle trek slippery and challenging to traverse. It is worth mentioning that certain additional activities may not be available during these months due to decreased tourist traffic.

Consequently, we advise that you come prepared with lightweight warm clothing.

It is crucial to be well-equipped for the tropical conditions you will encounter during your trek.

Advantages: The temperature during this month ranges from 15 °C (59 °F) to 22 °C (71.6 °F), allowing for a more comfortable and cooler trekking experience. Additionally, the influx of tourists remains low and the landscapes retain their green and splendid appearance due to the recent rains.

The daytime temperature ranges from 25˚C(77˚F) and above, while nighttime temperatures dip to around 3°C (37°F). However, occasional showers may still occur. As such, it is imperative to come prepared with suitable attire, including a waterproof jacket.

Disadvantages: Nights in this month tend to be slightly cooler, and the demand for various services remains high. Therefore, it is advisable to secure your tour bookings well in advance.

Inca Jungle trek in September

September serves as a transitional period bridging the gap between the arid season and the wet season. Despite the prevailing clarity and sunshine, the likelihood of precipitation grows.

Advantages: In Cusco, the temperature ranges from a maximum of 24 °C (76 °F) to a minimum of approximately 5 °C (41 °F). On the more temperate Inca Jungle route, the temperature hovers around 30 °C (86 °F). Seize this chance, for it represents the final month characterized by unobstructed skies.

Disadvantages: The weather exhibits a capricious nature, with the possibility of overcast skies and occasional light rainfall. It is crucial to exercise caution and wear appropriate footwear with reliable traction to ensure trekking safety.

The activities included in the trek are as follows:

Cycling: It requires a certain level of risk as it involves moving on roads, paths, or trails in natural areas. You should have a basic or intermediate level of fitness. It is important to note that you are not required to possess a bicycle, since the travel agency will provide one to you.

Trekking: In the Inca Jungle Trek tour, you will walk through a variety of natural setting such as mountains, forests, jungles, canyons, and rivers. The level of trekking varies from easy to moderate, so you should be in good health to participate.

Canoeing or Rafting: It is a sport that is practiced in both white water rivers and calm water rivers. Canoeing and rafting are popular activities during Inca Jungle trek tours. You will navigate in the waters of the Urubamba River; therefore, it is mandatory to listen closely to the talk prior to the practice, and the activity level will be I or II, depending on the river’s intensity.

There are different levels to practice rafting, which are the following:

LEVEL DEFINITION
I The waters are very calm, with no rapids or obstacles. It is suitable for beginners and does not require previous rafting experience.
II Basic level rapids with gentle currents and some small obstacles. Still suitable for beginners.
III Moderate rapids featuring larger waves, faster currents and more challenging obstacles. Some rafting experience is required.
IV Difficult rapids that have fast currents, large waves, eddies and considerable obstacles. Good paddling skills are needed, as well as the ability to maneuver quickly. Previous rafting experience is recommended before attempting this level.
V Extremely challenging and dangerous rapids. They include very fast currents, large waves, eddies, strong currents and difficult obstacles. This level is recommended only for people with rafting experience.

The suggested period for engaging in rafting spans from May to October:

  • During the months of July to August, individuals have the opportunity to partake in rafting at various difficulty levels, as the water flow is at its lowest point throughout the year.
  • From December to April, individuals can experience rafting at a more challenging level due to the occurrence of the rainy season. Sometimes, however, the river is too heavy and rafting is not possible.

Additional information: There are two ways to go rafting (on your own or in a group), however, it is advisable to go in a group and with a trained person. Hire an agency that offers security, guarantees the services and is reliable.

Inca Jungle Trek vs Inca Trail

The primary distinction between the Inca Jungle Trek and the Inca Trail lies in the chosen path and the activities undertaken during each journey.

Pathway

  • The Inca Trail, a historical route once utilized by the Incas, is a traditional trek spanning approximately 43 kilometers that directly leads to the Machu Picchu citadel.
  • On the other hand, the Inca Jungle Trek offers an alternative and more adventurous pathway, combining hiking, mountain biking, rafting, and ziplining, ultimately leading to Machu Picchu.

Duration and Difficulty

  • Typically lasting between 4 and 5 days, the Inca Trail’s duration depends on the walking pace (a shorter version of 2 days is also available) and entails demanding sections along the route.
  • In comparison, the Inca Jungle Trek generally spans 4 days (with a 3-day option as well) and requires a moderate level of fitness. However, due to the inclusion of activities such as biking, rafting, and ziplining, it can be slightly more challenging.

Experience and Scenery

  • The Inca Trail showcases ancient Inca ruins, panoramic mountain views, the Cusco jungle, and a triumphant entrance to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.
  • In contrast, the Inca Jungle Trek not only offers mountain scenery but also enables the enjoyment of lush rainforest vegetation, biking down Abra Malaga, rafting along rivers, and experiencing the exhilarating rush of ziplining.

Optional Trekking within Machu Picchu (Optional hikes in Inka Jungle and Inca Trail)

  • Huayna Picchu Mountain: Admission to this mountain costs an additional $75 per person. To secure entry, it is essential to make advanced reservations. The round trip typically takes around two hours.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain: This mountain requires an additional fee of $75 per person. It is crucial to book in advance. As the highest peak surrounding Machu Picchu, it takes approximately 3 hours to complete the round trip.
  • Huchuy Picchu: Admission to Huchuy Picchu costs an extra $62 per person. This ticket grants access to Machu Picchu one hour earlier, allowing exploration of the Inca citadel via Circuit 4.
  • Inca Bridge: The ticket to visit both Machu Picchu and the Inca Bridge amounts to $60. Remember to make reservations in advance.

Nonetheless, if you plan to visit other regions, please consult with your doctor or local travel clinic regarding your visit to South America. Vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria, and polio are recommended. If you are traveling to the Amazon, a yellow fever vaccination is also advised.

Please be aware that diseases such as malaria and dengue fever are more prevalent in the Amazon than in the Andes, and they can be effectively prevented by using repellent.
