Although there have been more than 20 successful climbs of the mountain, it is not often conquered.
- Salkantay Mountain was first successfully climbed in 1952 by a French-American expedition.
- Two years later in 1954, Fritz Kasparek(Austrian, part of the first team to conquer the North Face of the Eiger) and his partner Anton Wahenauer were killed when a cornice broke off of the NE ridge at about 5,900mts. The other two climbers Waschek and Ambichl survive and the expedition retreats.
- On June 17th, 2013 at 10:30 am, Nathan Heald, Thomas Ryan (USA), Luis Crispin Quispe (Peru) successfully climbed the Mountain. They completed the 3rd ascent of NE ridge and Luis Crispin makes first absolute Peruvian ascent. This ascent is the speed record on Salkantay being only 2 days and 7 hours round trip from Base Camp.
- On July 31st, 2013 at 11:30 am Nathan Heald, James Lissy (USA), Edwin Espinoza Sotelo (Peru) completed the 4th ascent of NE ridge. Edwin Espinoza becomes 2nd Peruvian to the summit and Nathan Heald becomes the only mountaineer to climb the mountain twice.
“Your true traveler finds boredom rather agreeable than painful. It is the symbol of his liberty – his excessive freedom. He accepts his boredom, when it comes, not merely philosophically, but almost with pleasure.”
