Is the Inca Trail worth it? Which are the requirements for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu? Are you one of those adventurous people who love hiking and one of your plans is to get to Peru? It is important to know what documents you need for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

How do I buy my tickets for the Inca Trail? How can I get those permits to access the Inca Trail?

The entrance to the Inca Trail is limited by disposition of the Peruvian state in favor of the conservation of these ancestral pre-Hispanic roads. This means that the purchase of tickets to access the Inca Trail is through an authorized travel agency. The travel agency must be authorized to provide this type of service, if you have doubts about your agency you can enter the page of MINCETUR – AUTHORIZED TRAVEL AGENCIES.

Once you have chosen your agency, you will be asked for some documents, usually a passport or an identity card if applicable, these documents are to proceed with the processing of tickets for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED FOR THE INCA TRAIL?

The most important personal document to start with the procedures and obtain an entrance ticket to the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, is the PASSPORT. Consider that it must be valid and in good condition, make sure that the letters of your data are visible and your photo is as current as possible; otherwise, you will not be able to get the tour or enter the route.

There are also other specifications that you should consider:

  • Residents outside Peru must present a passport.
  • Residents of South America must present their national identity card or passport.
  • Peruvian nationals, whether or not they reside in Peru, must present their national identity card.
  • For Peruvian residents of any nationality, they must present a foreigner’s identity card.

Is the Inca Trail worth it? – LEARN ABOUT INCA TRAIL REQUIREMENTS THAT GIVE YOU DISCOUNTS!

If in your travel group there are minors, university students or people who belong to the Andean Community of Nations (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador y Peru), pay attention because you can access special discounts on the purchase of tickets for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Minors: People between 12 to 17 years old, besides having a special discount, can trek the Inca Trail always in the company and under the responsibility of a parent or guardian. To access the discount you must present your passport.

University students: No matter if you are a foreign or Peruvian university student, you also have the benefit and in order to validate your benefit you must also present your valid university card at the time of purchase of your tour package. Please note that the benefit is for undergraduate students.

People from the Andean Community of Nations: from the countries of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia or Bolivia who have a valid national identity card. As in the other cases, the document must be in good condition with the information and photograph visible.

The discount for these exceptions is approximately US$25, to access the discount you must indicate to your sales consultant that there are people in your group who apply for the discount.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT PRESENT MY PERSONAL DOCUMENTS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TREK?

The tour will be cancelled immediately, with no chance to re-purchase tickets. Government regulations do NOT offer the option to purchase a new travel permit with a new passport number, even at full price.

REQUIREMENTS TO GET TO PERU

You already know the requirements for the Inca Trail, now you must know what requirements you need to get to Peru.

Most countries only need a passport as the main document to enter Peru; however, there are countries that require a VISA processed at the Peruvian consulate.

  • In Europe: specifically the countries of Georgia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Azerbaijan, Albania.
  • In America: countries such as Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua.
  • In Asia: the countries of Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, East Timor, Tajikistan, Syria, Laos, North Korea, Qatar, Pakistan, Nepal, Mongolia, Maldives, Lebanon, Libya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, India, United Arab Emirates, China, Cambodia, Bhutan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Armenia.

WHERE IS THE INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU LOCATED?

The Inca Trail or Qhapac Ñan was a large network of Inca trails that crossed much of South America, crossing 6 South American countries: Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and Colombia, covering approximately 30,000 kilometers (18641 miles). A small, well-preserved section of this great network of Inca trails is known as the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

The latter is the most popular and suitable trek for hiking and tourism within the Cusco region with 43 kilometers (27 miles).

DO I NEED TO REGISTER MY ENTRANCE TO THE INCA TRAIL? WHY?

Yes, because the entrance to the Inca Trail is unlimited. The Peruvian government, through MINCETUR and SERNAP, has made available 500 spaces per day, of which 250 are for travelers and 250 for the staff that moves camps (porters).
