Location:

The archeological site of Pucara is located 106 km from the Puno Region, Lampa Province, Pucara District, Peru. It is located to the north-west of Lake Titicaca.

Facts about Pucara:

This was an influential culture north of Lake Titicaca, centred at Pukara. This culture incorporated earlier communities of the Chiripa period, and ultimately dominated the entire lake region by 200 BC. The Pukara engaged in agriculture, herding and fishing. The population lived in small towns and villages, which was ruled from central location. 

Pukara ceramics are painted in various colours. They are finely made, and include many non-utilitarian forms, such as human and animal motifs.

Things that make Pucara interesting:

Pucará is famous for its pottery, especially for its well known “Toritos”. Pucara pottery and textiles are found widely in the middle Andean, and the coastal Pacific valleys, reaching out into Peru and Chile.

In the archeological complex of Kalasaya, you can distinguish two sectors: a ceremonial area composed by nine pyramids and the urban sector. The ceremonial sector is more appealing since it consists of pyramids that look like terraces.



What can see in Pucara?

Santa Isabel church:

According to the history, this church was built by the jesuits in 1767. It had changed over the time. It has a baroque architectural style.

Santa Isabel church was declared National Heritage in 1972. It is there where Virgen del Carmen feast takes place every year on July 16.

Lithic Museum of Pucara

Another impressive site you will see is the “Museo Litico de Pucara” (Pucara Stone Museum). This museum has interesting objects from the Pucara pre-Inca Culture.

The Lithic Museum of Pucara displays a good little selection of anthropomorphic monoliths, zoomorphic sculptures, ceramics, and other objects.

Archeological Complex of Kalasaya:

This archeological complex has the ceremonial sector which is composed of 9 pyramids of various shapes and sizes, the most important being the pyramid Kalasaya. This structure is built of large monoliths of finely crafted stone, and includes some sculptures. In front of the pyramid, there is a staircase to the upper temple decorated with stelae.

How to get to Pucara?

To get to Pucara, you need to go to the bus stop where cars go from Juliaca to Ayaviri. The cost of the ticket is PEN 5.

Fees to enter  the Lithic Museum of Pucara:

The entrance ticket for adults is S/.15.00 PEN, while it is S/.5.00 PEN for students. For local students it is S/. 1.00 PEN.

Opening Hours:

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

How to get to the Archeological complex of Kalasaya?

Getting to Archeological complex of Kalasaya is easy. You will need to walk only 15 minutes from the Pucara town to the complex. There are no tourist guides here and you don’t have to pay anything to visit the archeological complex.
