Battle of Yanacocha, Cusco

The Battle of Yanacocha of 1835 took place in the beautiful Yanacocha lagoon, located in the town of Huayoccari in the province of Urubamba, Cusco. Peruvian army led by Agustín Gamarra fought against the Bolivian army led by the president of the country, Andres De Santa Cruz.

But, what was the main cause of the battle? The main cause of the battle was the prevalence criteria of domains. The leaders of both countries were looking for controlling the opposite side. Since no agreement was achieved, both countries decided to fight in the battle called Battle of Yanacocha.

Unfortunately, Peruvian army was defeated by the Bolivian army and  general Agustín Gamarra disappeared after that. He looked for alliances outside the country to deal with the failure at war.

How to get to Yanacocha Lagoon?

To get to Yanacocha Lagoon, you have to walk 5 hours approximately. Along the road, you will be able to observe a great variety of flora and fauna of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. One of the most outstanding things of the lagoon is the color of the water, why? Yanacocha has the black or dark color due to the minerals that are around it.

Hiking Level:

The hiking level is III and it is recommendable to have good physical condition. 

Tips to hike Yanacocha Lagoon:

  • Before hiking Yanacocha Lagoon, you need to acclimatize to the altitude in Cusco. It usually takes from 2 to 3 days. If you suffer from altitude sickness, you should drink coca tea or chew some coca leaves.
  • Pack light and warm clothes.
  • Wear comfortable hiking boots. They must be worn in advance so your feet won’t get hurt if they are new.
  • You can bring trekking poles. They will help you keep the balance while hiking.
  • Keep hydrated during the hike.
  • Wear a hat and sunscreen to prevent sun damage
  • Bring your personal documents with you. You can be asked to show them any time during your trip.
  • Children under 15 years old must be under adult supervision.
  • Take some cash with you, preferably local currency. 
  • You will want to capture the best moments of the hike and Yanacocha Lagoon, so a good camera will be very important.

Interesting Facts about Yanacocha Lagoon:

The name Yanacocha Lagoon, comes from Quechua “yana” black, very dark and “qucha” lake, lagoon, so we can translate it as “black lake or lagoon”. This is because of the presence of black Ticn at the bottom of the lagoon, which reflected on its water looks dark to our eyes.

Yanacocha Lagoon is part of activities that you shouldn’t miss in Ollantaytambo.
