Tourist Attraction sites to visit in the province of Calca, Cusco

Calca is part of the 13 provinces of Cusco, located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It has a lovely weather during the dry season, from April to October. If you have the opportunity to visit this beautiful province, we recommend going to the most popular tourist attraction sites. We have prepared a list of them.

Great Puma of Calca

Location:

Province of Calca is part of the 13 provinces of the department of Cusco. It is located in the heart of Sacred Valley of the Incas between Pisaq and Urubamba, 50 Km from Cusco approximately.

Altitude:

Calca is located at an altitude of 2925 m.a.s.l, surrounded by impressive mountains such as Pitusiray Mountain, which is at an altitude of  4987 m.a.s.l.

Most popular Tourist Attraction sites:

Huchuy Qosqo

Archeological site of Huchuy Qosqo (Quechua: “Small Cusco” is also called Yuchuy Cusco) is located 50 km northside of Cusco, at 3600 m.a.s.l in the town of Lamay in the district and province of Calca, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Archeological site:

In the past Huchuy Qosqo or Small Cusco served as a strategic surveillance and control site to the Sacred Valley of the Incas as well as a refuge for the Inca when he was at war with the chancas. Among the adobe and stone buildings we can find:

  • Houses
  • Agricultural terraces
  • Rectangular building which is believed to be a resting site for the Inca Royalty.

Many of the buildings were made of stone, adobe, one of them is a kallanka (big hall), 40m long. Providing water to the site is an Inca built irrigation channel, lined with stones for about 800m.

Inca Wall and Agricultural terrace:

The Spanish took control of Huchuy Qosqo in the 1500s, after the Manco Inca Revolution (approx. 1540) and used the site as a farm. The Incas had constructed several small reservoirs for irrigation. During their time at Huchuy Qosqo the Spanish demolished some other Inca structures to build the larger reservoir you see today.

Below the main Huchuy Qosqo site are the recently restored store houses qolqas for dried meat and crops such as corn, potatoes, quinoa, beans, among other products of the area.

We recommend visiting Archeological site of Huchuy Qosqo during the dry season, from April to October since the weather is perfect to enjoy the beautiful landscapes.

This site is inaccessible by public road and only accessible by a physically strenuous hike or on horseback. The two main access points by foot are from Lamay — 3 hours up a steep set of switchbacks — or from Tauca, Peru — about 4 – 6 hours on foot, the first third of the hike steadily increasing to a pass at 4400m, then mostly downhill, and visiting some other ruins. The 2 day route from Tauca to Lamay is described in Peter Frost’s “Exploring the Cusco”. A number of tour groups also lead two-day hikes or horseback trips to Huchuy Qosqo.

Inkariy Museum:

Inkariy museum is located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The Peruvian Museums were created to exhibit and keep alive the culture, especially the one of the region of Cusco. This is why the Inkariy Museum opened its doors to the public with the aim of improving and making known Cusco history. Inkayni Peru Tours is happy to share some important facts of the Inkariy Museum.

The Mérida family of Cusco funded and built this museum. Edilberto Mérida (1927-2009) is a famous XX century artist and sculptor and creator of “indian expressionism”.

Inkariy Museum also intends to become a reference point for research and teaching on the pre-Columbian history of Peru. An interesting aspect of the Inkariy Museum is its 360 degree approach. In fact, all the most important cultures of Peru are treated. Inside the museum there are eight connecting rooms where you can see:

  • Iconic scenes of Caral life (musical scene)
  • Chavin (the cult of the Monolithic totem deities)
  • Moche (the goldsmiths work)
  • Paracas (the burial of their dead)
  • Wari (warrior side)
  • Nazca (famous lines)
  • Inca (Cusco court)

The scenes are so realistic that you can feel you are part of them.
