Immerse yourself in a unique journey through the most spectacular ecosystems of the Peruvian Andes. This full-day birdwatching tour takes you from 3,000 up to more than 4,300 meters in altitude, crossing high Andean puna grasslands, humid forests, and cloud forest habitats.
With the guidance of an expert local birder, you’ll have the chance to spot endemic species such as the White-tufted Sunbeam, Marcapata Spinetail, and the iconic Sword-billed Hummingbird. With some luck, you might even witness the majestic Andean Condor soaring above the peaks.

Abra Málaga Birdwatching Tour
We’ll depart early from your hotel toward Abra Málaga. Our first stop will be in the shrubby vegetation zone, where we’ll look for endemic species such as the Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, White-tufted Sunbeam, Rusty-fronted Canastero, and Creamy-crested Spinetail. A great variety of hummingbirds can also be seen, including the Giant Hummingbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Great Sapphirewing, Shining Sunbeam, Sparkling Violetear, Tyrian Metaltail, and the extraordinary Sword-billed Hummingbird.
As we reach the pass, birding becomes even more rewarding with various seed-eaters, Sierra finches, and ground tyrants. Raptors are also a possibility, and with good fortune, we may spot the majestic Andean Condor.
Once we cross the pass, the habitat becomes more humid along the eastern Andean slopes. The change in vegetation is dramatic: the Chusquea bamboo patches offer good chances to observe the endemic Parodis Hemispingus, Unstreaked Tit-tyrant, Marcapata Spinetail, and several species of conebills, furnariids, mountain tanagers, and flycatchers. Fast-flowing streams are ideal for Torrent Ducks and White-capped Dippers. Return to your hotel in the afternoon.

Where exactly does the birdwatching tour take place?
This tour takes place at Abra Málaga Pass and its eastern slopes, located between the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the province of La Convención. Along the route, we cross several ecosystems: Andean scrub, puna grassland, upper montane forest, and cloud forest — each with its own unique birdlife.
What time does the tour start and how long does it last?
The tour starts around 5:00–6:00 a.m., depending on your location, and lasts about 6 to 7 hours, including transfers. The early departure is key to observing the most active species.
What kind of birds can I see?
Highlight species include the Sword-billed Hummingbird, White-tufted Sunbeam (endemic), Tyrian Metaltail, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, and — with some luck — the Andean Condor. You’ll also see flycatchers, tanagers, furnariids, raptors, and river species like the Torrent Duck.
Do I need previous birdwatching experience?
No. This tour is suitable for both beginners and experienced birders. The guide will adapt to your level and assist with the use of binoculars, field guides, and eBird lists.
What is the physical difficulty level?
It’s an easy to moderate activity. There are no long hikes, but birding is done at high altitude (up to 4,316 m / 14,160 ft), so basic acclimatization is recommended.
Is transportation included?
Yes. Private transportation is included from your hotel (Cusco or the Sacred Valley) to Abra Málaga and back to your hotel at the end of the tour.
What should I bring to the tour?
We recommend warm, waterproof clothing, comfortable shoes, binoculars if you have them, sunscreen, a hat, and water. Weather conditions can change quickly, so be prepared for sun, rain, and cold.
Is food included during the tour?
Meals are not included, but there is the option to stop for lunch at local restaurants along the route (at the traveler’s expense). We recommend bringing snacks, fruit, or a box lunch.
Is the tour canceled due to bad weather?
The tour operates even in changing weather, as many species are more active in mist or humidity. It will only be canceled in extreme conditions that compromise safety.
