Tips to avoid Altitude Sickness in Pallay Poncho

Inkayni Peru Tours recommends acclimatizing to the altitude first. Symptoms of altitude sickness usually come on within 12 to 24 hours of reaching a higher elevation and then get better within a day or two as your body adjusts to the change in altitude. After 2 or 3 days, you will be able to do any challenging hike or tour around the beautiful city of Cusco.

Here are some suggestions for you to avoid Altitude Sickness in Cusco:

    • Visit the doctor first. It is highly recommended that visitors with cardiac problems have a check-up prior to their trip.
    • Avoid alcohol. Abstain from drinking alcohol on the first day in Cusco. A night without partying in this town can be hard, but it is important to remember that walks are long and demanding, especially if you plan to hike the Inca Trail.
    • Take things easy. It is advisable to take it really easy on the first day.
    • Rest the first few hours to help the body acclimatize to the altitude, and take deep breaths every now and then.
    • Don’t Overexert Yourself. It takes time for your body to acclimate to the low levels of oxygen at such high elevations.
    • Stay hydrated. The body gets dehydrated quickly in high altitudes. It is recommended you drink lots of water before and during your trip to Cusco.
    • A home remedy is to drink Coca Tea. Just remember coca is a mild stimulant so don’t go over the top and drink cup loads.
