A full day of boat excursion afloat Lake Titicaca. We will visit the ancient culture of the Uros and step foot on their floating islands. The islanders will give us a presentation about their lifestyle upon their man-made islands, built using the totora reed which grows among the shores of the lake. We will learn about their existence on these small islands and how they have adapted to its conditions.
Titicaca Lake, cradle of the Incas:
Location: Titicaca lake is the highest navigable lake in the world. It is located in the Andes on the border of Bolivia and Peru.
Altitude: 3.812 masl
Other cultures lived on Lake Titicaca prior to the arrival of the Incas. In 2000, a team of international archeologists and divers found the ruins of an underwater temple, thought to be between 1,000 and 1,500 years old, most likely built by the Tiwanaku people.
Titicaca Lake is the cradle of the Incas due to a myth that was told generation by generation. It is said that a mythical couple Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo were sent in search for a place for the children of the Sun. The ancestors migrated to other places via subterranean canals, and settled in rivers, mountains, turning them into sacred centers. They emerged from Lake Titicaca which is considered to be the place where the Andean civilization started from the waters, and it is also believed to be the place where spirits of the dead return to their origin.

Exploring Titicaca Lake water:
Titicaca’s waters are limpid and only slightly brackish, with salinity ranging from 5.2 to 5.5 parts per 1,000. Surface temperatures average 56 °F (14 °C); from a thermocline at 66 feet (20 m) temperatures drop to 52 °F (11 °C) at the bottom. Analyses show measurable quantities of sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, calcium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate in the water.
Continuing across the lake we will arrive to the Island of Amantani. Here we will meet the Quechua families that will offer us a cosy homestay style lodging and prepare us traditional food for lunch.
Amantani:
Amantani is an exotic image island with approximately 5000 people, most of them dedicated to vivential tourism and native handicraft. This is an incredible place that you should visit and Inkayni Peru Tours has designed a package that includes Amantani, “The Magic of the Andes.”
Location:
It is located in the heart of Lake Titicaca, in the region of Puno. It covers an area of 9.28 km ², the largest island of the Peruvian side of the lake.
Altitude:
Amantani is located at the top of Llacastiti Mount at an altitude of 4150 m.a.s.l.
Amantani island is a privileged place. From there you can admire awe-inspiring views of Lake Titicaca. For more details visit our blog Amantani Island, Should you visit it?

After lunch we will make the short ascent to the two hilltops of the island while observing the daily lifestyle of the local people. Atop of the island we will visit two ancient pre-Inca temples, Pachatata and Pachamama (father & mother cosmos). In the evening after dinner the community members will hold a small welcoming party for us.
Lodging: Amantani Island (Homestay)

Day 2: Taquile – Puno
After breakfast on Amantani we will board the boat again to make the short trip to the neighboring island of Taquile. It is known for its textile art, which is produced as an everyday activity by both men and women, regardless of their age, and worn by all community members.
Location:
It is an island located on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca 45 km offshore from the city of Puno.
Altitude:
The highest point of the island is 4,050 metres (13,287 feet) above sea level and the main village is at 3,950 metres (12,959 feet).

Taquile’s people are cheerful and proud of their origin and culture, happy to share with us the beautiful atmosphere of island life upon the immense lake Titicaca.
