Description:
It is a family run private organization dedicated to rescuing and looking after animals which have suffered mistreatment or were found injured in the wild. Since CAS (Ccochahuasi Animal Sanctuary), a non-profit organization, was established in 2007 they have been sheltering wild species, many of which are endangered.
How do the animals get to Ccochahuasi Animal Sanctuary?
These rescued animals are put under the care of C.A.S by The forest Rangers, a dependency of The National Police or by the National Government.
What animals will you see in the Sanctuary?
Among the animals you can see during your visit, we can name:
Puma:
The puma is a symbol of strength, wisdom and intelligence. It represents the ‘Kay Pacha’, Quechua word that means ‘the world of the living’. It is believed that Cusco, the capital of the empire of the Incas, has the shape of a puma, being Sacsayhuaman the head and Qoricancha the tail.

Andean Condor:
Condor is one of the largest flying animals in the world, with a nearly 11-foot wingspan. The condor, symbolizing righteousness, was considered the most sacred bird by the Incas. Many consider the condor as the Andes King of Cusco. Unfortunately this flying animal is in danger of extinction. Therefore, we need your support.
Note: The Inca trilogy is represented in these three animals: the serpent, the puma and the condor.

Vicuñas:
Vicuñas are cousins of llamas and were celebrated by the Incas for their fine wool. This was so cherished that in Inca society only royalty was permitted to wear clothing made from vicuñas. The wool is popular because of its softness and its ability to retain heat.
Unfortunately, like the condor, vicuña is in danger of extinction.

Llamas:
Llamas were the Incas’ most important domestic animal, providing food, clothing and acting as beasts of burden. It is a South American member of the camel family, Camelidae (order Artiodactyla), closely related to the alpaca, guanaco, and vicuña, which are known collectively as lamoids. It can weight from 90 to 158kg.
Macaws:
Macaws have long tail feathers as well as big beaks. Macaw adaptations include large, curved, powerful beaks designed to crack open hard nuts and seeds. These parrots have a long, streamlined physique and colorful feathering, ranging from the hyacinth macaw’s hyacinth blue to the scarlet macaw’s scarlet red coloring.
