They created the terraces by hauling richer topsoil by hand from the lower lands. The terraces enabled the production of surplus food, more than would normally be possible at altitudes as high as 11,000 feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pisac is formed by a set of enclosures that possibly are dwellings, aqueducts, roads, bridges, a cemetery, and walls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With military, religious, and agricultural structures, the site served at least a triple purpose. Researchers believe that Pisac defended the southern entrance to the Sacred Valley, while Choquequirao defended the western entrance, and the fortress at Ollantaytambo the northern. Inca Pisac controlled a route which connected the Inca Empire with the border of the rainforest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Location:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Archeological Complex of Pisac is located in the district of Pisac, Province of Calca, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Days are bright and sunny with a temperature of 16 \u00b0C (61 \u00b0F) while nights are much colder sometimes with a low temperature of 0 \u00b0C (32 \u00b0F).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Rainy season: From November to April<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this time Cusco receives a greater amount of rainfall. Photo by: Luz Incappui\u00f1o<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b>What is the best season to visit Pisac?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inkayniperutours.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><b>Inkayni Peru Tours<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends visiting Pisa during the dry season, from May to October\u00a0 since there is less rain and the roads are safer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What will you see in the Archeological Complex of Pisac?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Archeological Complex of Pisac, you will find the following interesting things:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1.- Acchapata Terraces:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most impressive feature is the agricultural terracing, which sweeps around the south and east flanks of the mountain in huge and graceful curves, almost entirely unbroken by steps. The terracing is joined by diagonal flights of stairs made of flagstones set into the terrace walls.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2.-Towers or Pucaras:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 20 towers were erected on the edges of the mountain. Below the towers are also formidable terraces \u2013 used for farming, but could also provide a lot of protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 2 types on towers in the site:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>The City of the Towers:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is believed that its developments served as water channels, which still exist today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Watchtowers:<\/i><\/b> In positions overlooking the valley, these watchtowers stand in the way of the path up from where colonial Pisac is today located, and above the path to Pisaqa. It is located at the top of the mountain and from that point the whole valley can be appreciated. Its precise use is unknown, but the word means \u201cplace where the sun is tied\u201d or \u201cSundial\u201d, a hitching post of the sun. Its name suggests a relevance to the winter solstice and the festival of Inti Raymi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The religious and ceremonial area of Pisac is considered one of the finest examples of Inca architecture. The stone work here is considered by many to be technically superior to most other Inca urban centers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4.- Tianayuc:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In quechua it means \u201cit has a seat\u201d. If coming from the tunnel you will have to pass through what is perhaps an administration area with an interesting feature \u2013 you can find a perfect seat for two people, carved on a stone. Photo by: Luz Incappui\u00f1o<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<h2><b>5.- K\u2019alla Q\u2019asa:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are roughly 30 buildings here \u2013 living quarters in what is thought to be the residential area for those on guard at Pisac. As well as being a ceremonial center, administrative centre, cemetery, agricultural centre and urban area, Pisaq is thought to also have been garrisoned. Here the buildings are built rough field stone too, but a lot more engineering when into their construction.
